New York Law Exam (NYLE) Frequently Asked Questions

What is the New York Law Exam (NYLE)?

The New York Law Exam (NYLE) is an open-book online exam, in addition to the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE), that you must take in order to become a New York attorney. You can register for the NYLE only after you complete the New York Law Course (NYLC).

How many questions are on the New York Law Exam?

There are fifty (50) questions on the NYLE.

What is the passing score for the NYLE?

To pass the NYLE, you need to receive a score of 60% or higher. This means that you need to answer 30/50 questions correctly to pass the NYLE.

When is the New York Law Exam administered?

The New York State Board of Law Examiners administers the New York Law Exam (NYLE) three (3) times a year in April, September, and December. The next NYLE dates are listed below.

Date of ExamRegistration Deadline
December 14, 2023November 14, 2023
April 11, 2024March 12, 2024
September 19, 2024August 20, 2024

Don’t forget that you must compete the NYLC before you can register for the NYLE.

How long should I study for the NYLE?

We recommend studying for the NYLE for at least one month (4 weeks). The time between the registration deadline and the date of the exam is at least one month, which suggests that you need one month to study for the exam at the very least. In addition, the New York State Board of Law Examiners warns that even though the exam is open-book, the exam will be a rigorous exam and there will not be time to research the answer to every question.

How to prepare for the New York Law Exam?

To prepare for the NYLE, you will need to read the course materials and answer practice questions. Watching the NYLC videos, alone, will not prepare you for the exam because the questions on the NYLE are harder than the questions at the end of the video segments.

Where can I find practice questions or practice tests for the NYLE?

You can find practice questions for the NYLE on the New York State Board of Law Examiners’ website. The Board provides twenty (20) practice questions with at least one question from every subject. In our experience, we found that the NYLE asks questions in a hypothetical scenario format, as well as in the format listed in the practice questions. Note, questions on the NYLE will not include subdivisions on where to find the answers in the course materials, as they are in the practice questions the Board provides.

Welcome Home Justice also has practice questions for the New York Law Exam (NYLE) available.

When do I receive my results for the New York Law Exam (NYLE)?

Results of the NYLE are posted usually within two (2) weeks after you take the NYLE. You will receive an email when results are posted to your BOLE account.
